On Veteran’s Day, let us all pause to honor our service men and women, and to recall the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in defense of freedom and liberty. This year, our thoughts especially turn to those who were killed at Ft. Hood, and their families.
The following prayers are from the A Book of [...]

Recently, I ran across this quotation from W.H. Griffith Thomas in his excellent little book Life Abiding and Abounding (Chicago: The Bible Institute Colportage Association). Thomas is largely forgotten today–but that does a disservice to his astounding and varied literary labors. He deserves to be widely read because of his keen scholarship and clear writing, [...]

Deuteronomy 10:17-21 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: (18) He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. (19) Love ye therefore [...]

Do you ever struggle over prayers that God does not answer as you hope?
The other day I had a specific prayer request that I was praying about. It was not anything “big” in the sense that it pertained to some large, national event or anything like that. It wasn’t for my benefit, but for the [...]

“But deliver us from evil”
This petition of the Lord’s Prayer teaches us that we need God’s daily protection and deliverance from the forces of darkness in this world. The reality of evil surrounds us everywhere.
If you watch the evening news, there are plenty of daily manifestations of it. Worse and worse things greet us every [...]

“And lead us not into temptation”
In this petition, the Lord’s Prayer calls to mind the words of James 1:13:14,
“Let no man say when he is tempted I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man; but every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his [...]

“As we forgive those who trespass against us.”
In this clause we learn more about forgiveness. The previous clause instructs us to seek God’s forgiveness for our own transgressions; this clause teaches us to grant it to others. The role of forgiveness in prayer is sometimes overlooked–but not if we take our Lord’s Words to [...]

“And forgive us our trespasses”
In this clause of the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches us about forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a glorious thing. I John 1:8-10 remind us of both the need and availability of finding forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We must, as Jesus taught us in the Lord’s prayer, acknowledge our sins.
Forgiveness is inextricably linked to confession [...]
