I don’t get much birdwatching in during the spring and summer–too many farm chores like gardening and mowing to do. But fall and winter bring a more leisurely pace to Good Morning Farm in some respects.
I can seem to get more birdwatching in during the fall and winter.
A couple of weeks ago, I got this [...]

We took our family vacation to the Tidewater area of Virginia this past week. We visited Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg. and for me, the trip to Jamestown was the highlight of our trip to the Tidewater.
It was something to stop and realize that my own ancestors got off a ship from England as indentured [...]

This is a snowy egret. It was perched on a zoo worker’s hand, and flexed its wings right as I snapped.
Here is an adjutant stork. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but this is not a particularly attractive bird.Their numbers are diminishing world-wide. There are actually two subsets of this stork: [...]

This is a first of a two part posting on some of the really neat birds I saw at our church trip to the Cincinnati Zoo. We had a large group to go on June 30, and everyone had a really good time. I only saw a fraction of the birds they have. A return [...]

This Goldfinch has traded in his winter drabs for his spring yellows. Pretty amazing brilliance.

After I got in from work today I spotted an Eastern Nuthatch–I watched all winter for one but never did see one. Finally, one came to the feeder when I was looking! It was one of these birds that got me interested in birdwatching to begin with back a few years ago now.
These birds are [...]

A male house finch has been visiting the farm. I wasn’t able to positively identify this as a house finch until the third or fourth time he visited. The reason for my hesitation was that the house finch and the purple finch are similar. But this specimen has the slight downturn in the upper bill [...]

Here are a series of photos I took of a Great Blue Heron. The first was when it was on the bank of Kentucky Dam. Then, it took flight, and I’ve put up the images in sequence as I shot them. I find the wading birds to be among the most fascinating. They are very [...]

On our recent visit to the Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley area, spring was in the air. The trees that survived the ice storm were in bloom and warmer temperatures signaled the ending of winter.

I think this is a downy woodpecker. The photo was taken at Lake Barkley, early Sunday morning just after first light.
At first, I wasn’t sure if it was a Downy or a Hairy woodpecker. I consulted the Sibley Guide, and it helped me make the call that it was a Downy based on bill length. [...]
