G. Campbell Morgan (1863-1945) was one of the world’s foremost evangelical Bible teachers. His ministry began in England, and then moved to America, and then back to England, and then back to America once again. He was well known on both sides of the Atlantic as being a knowledgable expositor of God’s Word. His daughter-in-law, Jill Morgan, wrote his biography. It is entitled A Man of the Word (Baker, 1972). In this book, the following quote about bringing children to faith in Christ is found:
“You cannot compel your child to an act of faith in Jesus Christ, but you can make it almost impossible for a child not to exercise that act of faith. My father and mother could not compel me to be a Christian, but as God is my witness, I had no choice because of what they did for me and what I saw in them.” (A Man of the Word, 192-193).
Scripture teaches us “Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4
This biography of Morgan is hard to find–it is out of print and even used copies are quite expensive. If you ever come across a copy, I encourage you to buy it! It is a facinating look at one of the 20th century’s greatest expositors.
